Eyes Wide Shut: a Study Of The Film By Kubrick

Categories: Song

As I was writing my rock song, I was torn between what genre I was going to produce. At first, I was tempted to write a rap rock song similar to Run DMC’s Walk This Way, but at the same time, I wanted to write a folk song telling a story. Eventually, I decided that I would write a progressive rock song in order demonstrate my musical talents. In this song I wanted to portray the life of an ordinary individual and the struggles that they encounter.

This led to the creation of the every-day police officer, Red.

The first verse depicts Red as a young and immature police officer. His only goal throughout this verse was to catch a Peeping Tom, a rather minor offense compared to some of the occurrences that happen on a daily basis. However, as the song progresses into the second verse, 18 years have passed. During these 18 years, Red has matured and has captured many criminals.

The thrill from capturing his criminal has stimulated a lifelong journey of bringing peace to the world. Sadly, the line of duty has taken the lives of several of his partners throughout the years. However, he does not allow this to affect his emotions. This mental toughness is a sign of maturity and dedication to his role in society. The second verse also depicts how a new organized crime unit arises as their rivals begin to cease to exist. This alludes to the never-ending power struggle between good and evil.

This line may also hint at the New World Order or possibly the Illuminati.

Because this is a progressive rock song, the word choice has a major influence on the song. I chose to use atypical words in this song such as “voyeur”. By using extremely precise words, I am able to further develop the plot of the song, and include varies themes and motifs that can be further analyzed. This inclusion of the voyeur is a direct attack at the Alert Carolina system. In October 2013, a peeping incident was reported at the Connor Residence Hall-Alert Carolina alerted every student on campus of its occurrence. One year later, a death occurred near the University’s campus; however, this occurrence was never reported to the student body. This makes us question the actual usefulness and reliability of the Alert Carolina System as a whole.

I also chose to include spoken numbers such as “one-five-one”. In many rap songs, rap artists like to refer back to the area code that they grew up. However, 151 is not a valid area code in the United States while 719 is. This shows how Red has come from a nonexistent background but now has worked his way up to a real position on the police force. I chose the number 719 because it is the area code for the fictional town of South Park, Colorado-the town in the infamous comedy show South Park.

Lastly, I would like to talk about why I chose the name Red. Red stems from the father in That 70’s Show-Red Forman. During the first seasons of That 70’s Show, Red Forman is a grumpy old man whose main catharsis is calling people “dumbass”. However, throughout the series, Red’s personality shifts to become more balanced. The major turning point for Red Forman is when he loses his job and resorts to managing a grocery store. This occurrence can happen to any of us, and may have already happened to those listening to the song. This allows the listeners to relate to the lyrics on a personal level.

The music to this song will include various instruments such as an electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, drum kit, xylophone, synthesizer, and a string ensemble. The introduction of the song will be a long acoustic guitar solo, similar to Van Halen’s Spanish Fly. This introduction augments the song of progressive rock by showing off the musical virtuosity of the acoustic guitar player. Shortly after the introduction, the electric guitar, bass guitar, drums and synthsizer join in for the first verse. The electric guitar is going to have a light distortion sound, similar to the sound of the guitar in Pink Floyd’s Run Like Hell. The bass guitar is going to greatly influence the rhythm of the song as it is going to significantly louder than your typical bass guitar. I have always been a fan of a funky bass line, and I have always deeply loved the sound of slap bass, therefore I would like to incorporate a bass guitar with a slap bass style similar to Mark King of Level 42 into my song. The drums will also be loud, with a sound similar to Neil Peart of Rush’s style. The synthesizer will be very light, and will only exist (for now) to accent the music. Most importantly, the singer of the song needs to be a tenor with a range and timbre similar to Jon Anderson of Yes.

The majority of the song will be a “musical battle” in between the two verses. This will be between the electric guitar and the synthesizer and will be played in a style similar to The Devil Went Down To Georgia by The Charlie Daniels Band. This battle will symbolize Red’s various encounters with his rival in the first verse. As this battle comes to an end, all of the instruments except the electric guitar rest, allowing the electric guitar to have one final solo, symbolizing Red’s final triumph over his rival. The second verse will be identical to the first except for the fact that the synthesizer no longer plays. However, a xylophone will now complement the music similarly to the synthesizer. This replacement reflects back on the fact that another criminal consistently replaces the one that Red previously arrested-alluding to the never-ending struggle between good and evil. To sum up the song, the string section is going to come in along with the rest of the instruments and slowly fade out.
