The Mistakes I Made in My Poems Rb

Categories: Poems

Since I was a child I always liked to write. The writing was my favorite subject in school. When I would write, I would feel like I could fantasize about anything I wanted to and I could take the reader on my “voyages”. Writing means to be observant, fantasize, and see the world in a different perspective. Then, with the right words, describe one's thoughts and sensations. However, now I realize that since I have to write in English, which is not my first language, writing has become more tiring.

But not for this I want to lose this passion of mine.

Due to the fact that I oftentimes have to translate unknown words, or translate my thoughts from my native language to English, I often happen to make grammatical errors.

Additionally, since where I come from essays are formatted in a very different way, I often happen to make index mistakes, formatting errors, and mistakes when I cite sources. For example, in my very first college essay, “B.S., Lies and the Hidden Truth” I made a mistake in citing the source because additional information such as the day I viewed the article and the year the article was released were missing.

In fact, after the first line, “Babbitt, Paul. ‘Taking Bulls**t Seriously.’ The Chronicle of Higher Education, The Chronicle of Higher Education”, more information needed to be added in order for the source to be indented.

Furthermore, one of the biggest errors that I oftentimes make, and that it was one of the biggest problems in my recent college essays, is the misuse of punctuation.

For some reason I either put too many or I just forget the existence of commas. For example, in my very first college essay, “B.S., Lies and the Hidden Truth” In the sentence: “He also tries to provide a “treatment” for B.S. that once again, does not succeed.” (Megna) I forgot to use a comma to separate the phrase “once again” for emphasis. Another similar mistake to the previous one, was made in my casual essay “To Quit or Not to Quit, that is The Question.” In this essay, in the quote: “Most of the people that go to the village are looking for either a quick meal, an inexpensive meal or both.” (Megna)

I forgot the use of a comma after the word meal. Additionally, besides those punctuation mistakes, in my recent essay “To Quit or Not to Quit, that is The Question.” I happened to make capitalization mistakes. As a matter of fact, in the sentences: “Some other factors to be considered are that the Aventura Mall, a big mall located 2 Miles away” (Megna) and “The business is located in a well-known village situated in Hallandale beach, Florida.” (Megna) The word “mile” and the word “beach” should not have been and should have been capitalized, respectively. Both the punctuation and capitalization errors I made were probably due to not enough accuracy and attention while proofreading my final works.

The first step I have to make, which will really help improve my English and enlarge my vocabulary, will be to spend more time reading books and newspapers, and make notes of all the unfamiliar words so that I’ll be able to go back and see their meaning anytime I need to. The second step, which will help me order my thoughts in a more effective way and improve my way of writing, will be not to write my essays in a hurry, but to actually take my time.

I must therefore brainstorm ideas and then think about the facts and evidence of all the arguments pros and cons. I must believe a little more in myself by focusing exactly on what I really think and want to write about; then I'll have to find the right words to actually write my thoughts down. This takes time but preparation is the key to good writing and should not be rushed. Then, the third step that I’ll have to make, will be to proofread and check for any grammar and capitalization error. This third step will be crucial to help me avoid silly grammar, capitalization, and punctuation mistakes. Lastly, the final step that I will have to accomplish, which will be the hardest to fulfill, will be to think directly in English. Even though it takes time for one to become fluent and think in a language different from his first, this last step is crucial if I want to avoid translating my entire emotions and thoughts in English and make grammar and other mistakes.

By avoiding the mistakes and accomplish all the steps discussed above, I will be able to write in a more organized, efficient, and clear way. Every sentence will become a musical note that I will have to carefully listen to and follow to create beautiful music but, I must not forget the commas, which will give my songs the right rhythm. I consider writing as departing for a new adventure where I will establish my goal but at the same time I will wander with fantasy in search for new ideas. As for any other thing, it takes practice to become an expert and to write well. Therefore, I'll have to commit myself to writing more. I will have to proofread and correct my work several times until I reach the satisfaction of a job well done!
